Tax Doctor news and updates

This is where we post news from Tax Doctor: reminders before important Inland Revenue deadlines, changes to the way New Zealand tax returns are filed, new step-by-step guides, and updates about our own services and fees. The news is written for sole traders, contractors, landlords, individuals and small business owners who want to stay on top of their tax without reading legislation.

Tax Doctor news: a New Zealand tax return being signed

What you will find in our news

  • Reminders a few weeks before key filing and payment dates, so nothing catches you out.

  • New guides, such as our step-by-step guide on how to file your tax return in New Zealand.
  • Updates about Tax Doctor, including our services, fixed fees and the way we work online.

Our latest guide explains how to file your tax return, from checking whether you need to file to submitting your return in myIR or through a tax agent. You can also browse all our insights.

Key IRD dates to keep in mind

  • 7 July: individual income tax returns (IR3) are due if you file yourself.
  • 31 March: the extended due date when a registered tax agent files your return.
  • 28 August, 15 January and 7 May: provisional tax instalments under the standard method, for a 31 March balance date.
  • 7 February: terminal tax is due if you file yourself, or 7 April if you have a tax agent.

For official news and the current rules, see Inland Revenue at ird.govt.nz. Tax law and dates can change, and our news is general information rather than personal tax advice.

How often we post

We post when there is something worth knowing, rather than on a fixed schedule. Most updates cluster around the end of the tax year on 31 March, the 7 July filing deadline and the provisional tax dates, because that is when questions from clients peak. Each post is short and practical: what has changed or what is due, who it affects, and what you need to do next.

Where a topic needs more detail, we link to a full guide or to the relevant page on Inland Revenue’s website. Our clients also receive an email before their own deadlines, explaining what they need to pay and when, so they do not have to watch for the dates themselves.
